Buying a headscarf online has one obvious drawback: you cannot feel it. You see a colour on a screen and a price beside it, and everything else has to be inferred from a product description.
This article is meant to help with that. Five things that genuinely matter, and how to judge them before you order.
Of every specification, the weight in grams tells you the most about how a scarf will wear — and it is the number most often missing.
For reference, our three fabrics: Sheer Crêpe is 135 grams, Fluid Jersey 240, Premium Jersey 280. That is more than double from lightest to heaviest. You notice the difference within a minute of putting it on.
Lighter means airier and cooler, but also more sheer. Heavier means more coverage and more stability, but you feel it by the end of a long day. Neither is better — but it is the first thing you want to know.
Coverage is where online orders most often disappoint, because product photography always shows a model with everything already layered underneath.
Be specific here. Sheer Crêpe is sheer by design, and you wear an undercap beneath it for full coverage. Premium Jersey covers in most colours without anything underneath, though lighter shades can show a little. Fluid Jersey is fully opaque.
If a product description says nothing about coverage at all, assume you will need an undercap. More often than not, that is correct.
Our scarves are 175 × 70 cm. That is a rectangle rather than a square, and it shapes how you can wear it.
175 cm of length gives enough fabric to leave one side long and keep the other short, or to wrap both sides back. 70 cm of width falls over the shoulders without burying you in excess fabric. It is a size that works for both close and looser styles.
Much smaller becomes restrictive as soon as you want to drape. Much larger becomes unwieldy. If you see dimensions far from this, check carefully that the style suits you.
One more thing: our sizes can vary slightly, because fabric shrinks a little when ironed. That is true of almost all textiles — a manufacturer promising exact centimetres is not telling you the whole story.
Every display renders colour differently. A warm beige can read pink on one phone and yellow on another. For neutral tones — and our collection is largely neutrals — that variance is exactly where things go wrong.
Two practical suggestions. View product photos in daylight rather than under artificial light in the evening, and look at the images where the scarf is worn rather than the flat product shot: fabric in folds shows its true colour far better than fabric lying flat.
And when trying a new colour, start with the least expensive fabric in that shade. Sheer Crêpe from € 19.95 is a comfortable way to find out whether Greige or Deep Taupe suits you, before committing to it in something dearer.
Buying clothing online means sometimes getting it wrong. That is fine, as long as you know the terms in advance.
